Grinning BIG in Week Ten

What a gorgeous week it has been! We have gone creative these past four days. We spent our days planning and developing Noun Town, taking advantage of the fresh air and having class outside, continued work on our autobiographies, and diving deep in the cultures around the world.

Our Good Citizen!

This week was all about nouns! We started Monday off with a mini lesson on nouns (click here) and on Tuesday we had a scavenger hunt! Do you remember School House Rock!?

Click here to see our Noun Scavenger Hunt.
I hid slips of paper all around the room with nouns on them including all of our names and regular visitors. When students found a noun, they had to write it in the appropriate category (person, place, or thing).

Noun Town!

It's been the big ticket topic this week! In celebration of learning all about nouns we created our very own Noun Town! I love seeing a messy classroom at work. This was such a fun project that radiated collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking! Our favorite part is the mini people of us. Each student labeled their little person with the job that they possess in our classroom. See the progress here!

Number Bonds Outside

Since we had such a beautiful week we decided to take our education outdoors! In the company of the creatures of the grass and the fresh fall air, we learned all about number bonds and fact families. We had a mini lesson- brain followed by a break- group work- and independent work. It was awesome to see everyone engaged and participating. Fresh air is so good for our brains!!! We also enjoyed having the room to spread out and work independently or in small groups!

BRAIN BREAK! Tag you're it!

Independent or small group work. I LOVE this picture. You can see the wheels turning!

Bring it back together for some closure.

Doing Fine In Week Nine!

We have reached the last full week of the first quarter! Can you believe it's been nine weeks!? I am amazed at the growth I have seen. This quarter our roots were burried deep in community. We have learned that we need each and every friend in our class and without them our community would not be complete. We've dabbled in collaboration of all kinds and each day we paint with bursts of creativity and deep critical thinking.

Just a few pictures that snuck out of last weeks blog! Character day cuteness!!!

Our Good Citizen!

This week's good citizen showing off his detailed poster!

This week we worked on segmenting sounds and then blending them back!

More Math Centers!

Thanks to your help cutting and gluing, we've got more math centers! These math centers are going to reinforce the things we are learning during our math lessons. Addition and subtraction here we come! Thank you to all the wonderful parents who cut these out!

Addition and Subtraction here we come!

This week was a big week! We dug deep into addition and subtraction. The next few weeks will be full of adding and subtracting!

ELA Workshop

During ELA Workshop one of our centers is spelling. Every day there is a differnt spelling activity that needs to be done. On this day we were writing our words 5X. Spelling words and practice is differentiated as students all have different words. These words are determined by a pre-test taken the week before.

NEW BOOKS!

Thank you all for your generosity! We are loving all of our new library additions! Now, there is something for everyone to read!

Here are Good Citizen is reading his book!

All Hands On Math!

As we are learning to add and subtract, cubes and other manipulatives have been very useful! Stay tuned for a video on how to add and subtract using tens frames.

Messy Math Facts

We are knee deep in math facts! Our mathematicians are working hard to memorize their basic math facts. This is such a foundational skill that will help math problem solving into adulthood.

Caught being a Good Citizen!

We have two teacher cadets at the end of the day. Brooke and Caroline are in 8th and 6th grade. They come in and help out in our classroom, work 1:1 with students, and observe. This week they co-taught a fabulous addition lesson.

This is how we vote for our next week's Good Citizen.

ZOO!

This marks our first field trip. We enjoyed exploring the zoo and learning all sorts of things about animals and their habitats. Thank you to all parents who made this trip possible!!
